Dropped out of Cambridge after a year then out of Leeds after two, logging the fabulous achievement of three years of uni with nothing to show for it. Went to work in a bike shop, and from there phoned up a mountain bike magazine editor and told him his magazine was rubbish. Instead of telling me to piss off, he called my bluff and asked me to write for him. In late 89 I went to work for him full time on mountain Biking UK magazine in Kent, then moved to Bath when a bigger company bought the mag in 91. Left that in 95 to move to Australia with my then-wife and worked on bike and PC mags there, before ending up on a bike racing website, Cyclingnews.com, just as the internet was properly starting to happen in late 2000. Was poached in 2006 to return to the and help launch another cycling site, bikeradar.com with the company in Bath, Future, and divided my time between Sydney and the UK, which sounds far more glamorous that it was. Three-month stints away from home and 24-hour trips in economy class: not recommended. Worked my way up to the dizzy heights of editor-in-chief of the bike mags and sites at Future and came back to the UK for good before being made redundant in 2011. Since then I have been freelancing, and am currently contracting for a small but fun company called Factory Media and am living in London with my two dogs. I just launched totalwomenscycling.com, which I suppose makes me a virtual transvestite.

If i'd looked even half that good - instead of looking like I'd been dragged through a hedge backwards after being made up as Wurzel Gummidge by a blind, drunk make-up artist - I'd have kept the ponytail!
